What is tarnishing?

Tarnishing is not a manufacturing defect. It is the natural discolouration of metal that occurs when its surface is exposed to air and moisture. If you leave your silver jewellery exposed to the air a chemical reaction begins to take place known as oxidation. As the metal reacts with sulphur, moisture and other chemicals in the air it, starts to form a dark layer all over the item that is exposed. This process is often exacerbated by the presence of other everday chemicals that jewellery can be exposed to such as perfume, hairspray, other hair and cosmetic products and household cleaning products. Silver metal is particularly susceptible to tarnishing. To avoid tarnishing, place your jewellery in an airtight box. Tarnish can be easily removed by polishing the item affected.
